3 Stains
Stains are ordinary humans who knowingly assist Wraiths or participate in Requiem-related activities. Unlike Wraiths, Stains possess no supernatural abilities; their designation is based solely on their actions and associations.
A person may be classified as a Stain for sheltering a Wraith, refusing to disclose the location of Requiem-related groups, assisting Wagers, trafficking Requiem, or otherwise aiding those considered enemies of humanity. Even personal relationships are enough having a family member or close friend who is a Wraith may be sufficient to attract suspicion.
The term "Stain" was originally coined by DOSE, referring to such individuals as a stain upon humanity. Over time, the nickname spread beyond official use and became a common part of everyday language. While originally intended as an insult, many eventually embraced the label themselves.
DOSE treats Stains as accomplices to Requiem related crime. Depending on the severity of their involvement, Stains may be interrogated, imprisoned, or executed under emergency containment laws.
In practice, accusations alone are often enough to trigger a DOSE investigation.
Reports rarely require immediate proof, allowing entire homes or neighborhoods to be raided based solely on suspicion. As a result, innocent civilians are frequently mistaken for Stains and arrested before evidence can be verified.
Reporting a suspected Stain offers no reward or privileged treatment. Citizens are expected to cooperate out of civic duty rather than personal gain.
The reputation of a Stain varies greatly depending on location.
In areas heavily influenced by DOSE, being labeled a Stain often results in social isolation, unemployment, harassment, or public hostility. Families have been known to abandon relatives after learning of their designation, fearing association themselves.
Conversely, within Wraith communities, safehouses, and the underground economy, Stains are often respected as trusted allies who willingly risk their own lives to protect others.
As a result, many Stains live double lives as ordinary citizens by day, silent supporters of the Requiem world by night.
